Adrian's Auto Parts: Advice and Information

How to Buy Car and Truck Parts Online

If you're making a repair to your car or truck, you may need a certain part right away and may not think that buying those parts online is a good choice. However, online parts might be cheaper than those you buy from an automotive supply store, and you can often plan ahead for the parts you'll need for repairs. Many online companies also offer same day or overnight delivery, so you don't need to wait too long for those parts! When you do shop online for car and truck parts, note a few tips that will ensure you choose the best part for those repairs.

Know the details of your vehicle

Finding the year and make of your vehicle is easy enough, but many vehicles have specific models and require parts made for that specific model alone. For example, your car model might also be a 'DX' or 'LS' and so on. Each of these vehicle types will require different sizes of various parts.

If you're shopping for replacement parts online and see these terms being used, don't assume that they're all the same. Check your registration paperwork or even the body of your vehicle for any additional markings that would denote these specific types, so you get the parts made specifically for your vehicle.

Beware of compatible parts

You might see compatible parts available online, meaning parts that are not actually made by a car manufacturer; these are off-brand parts, supposedly able to fit a wide range of vehicles. However, some compatible parts are anything but compatible with the vehicles they supposedly fit! In some cases, these parts will be very low-quality, and they may leave gaps around other parts when installed or you need to literally pound the part into place. Any type of poor fit can compromise the performance of a car part and even the safety of your vehicle, so exercise caution if you're considering compatible parts.

Remember fittings and connectors

If you see a part online that seems surprisingly affordable, note if it's missing any type of fitting or connector. In some cases, the clamps, screws and other connectors that are currently under your car's hood may be in good condition and don't need replacing, but if they are rusted, worn or bent, you'll need a new part that includes its connecting pieces! Be sure to check if any part you're ordering includes these connectors or if you'll need to order them as well so you know you can actually attach that new part once it arrives.
